LISTEN | Volbeat

TitelMaybellene I Hofteholder
KünstlerVolbeat
Album: Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood
Veröffentlicht: 2008
Lieblingszeile: “Could you be the only one? Well I beg you to come home, dance forever my only one.”

Was macht er damit?

If I remember it correctly, Maybellene I Hofteholder, was the first song I heard by Volbeat. Immediately I noticed that this band has something special. MichaelPoulsen has a voice with a high recognition value. No matter where or when you hear something by Volbeat: you will know that they are playing. The band has this unique sound of the guitars and the mix of different genres. Therefore, their style is also often called “Elvis Metal”.

In an interview Poulsen said that the song is about a stalker which fell in the stripper Maybellene. Every night she dances in the bar and he sits at table 45. After some time he finds out that she spends her nights in the “Barbara Hotel” and because of that he decides to visit her, but each time he knocks, nobody opens the door. Later, he sets a fire in the hotel to lure her out of her room, but unfortunately Maybellene dies in the fire. But her dead body is never found.
At this point we have an open end. Did he take her body? What does he do with it? Questions about questions which we haven’t got answers for.

Volbeat often is criticized because of the fact, that many of their songs sound the same, but I think Maybellene IHofteholder, which means Maybellene in suspenders, has a distinct atmosphere. If you deal with the lyrics, one notices that the singer, who was responsible for the text, really thought about it and not just wrote anything down. I like them, because they bring a wind of change in my playlist.
