Funeral For A Friend ist eine eher unbekannte Post-Hardcore-Band, die aber schon lange im Geschäft ist. Mit dem Album Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation verschafften sie sich innerhalb der Szene großes Ansehen und auch genau von jenem stammt ihre Singleauskopplung Escape Artists Never Die.

Es geht - wie in tausend anderen Liedern auch - um Liebe, aber dieses Mal nicht die schöne mit den Schmetterlingen im Bauch, sondern um die, von der man schnellst möglich entkommen möchte. Eine Liebe, die fesselt, eine in der sich der Hass schürt, weil man so verdammt abhängig ist, obwohl die Beziehung eigentlich gar nicht mehr führen will. Dies wird in dem Lied mit der Arbeit eines Entfesslungskünstler verglichen. Vor allem die Textzeile „With a hundred thousand lies, timing’s everything.“ beschreibt das sehr gut. Alle warten darauf, dass man sich endlich befreit, alle Lichter richten sich genau in diesem wichtigen Moment auf einen und jetzt ist richtiges Timing alles.

Ich kenne das Lied schon ewig, aber in letzter Zeit habe ich es öfter gehört als früher. Es ist einfach ein Lied, das im Ohr bleibt. Ich mag die Stimme des Sängers, Matthew Davies, total gerne. Sie hat einfach viel Charakter. Aber auch die Musik, die Stimmung, die sie aufbaut, ist wirklich nicht zu verachten.

Wenn man Post-Hard-Core mag, der ein bisschen emo ist, dann sollte man sich die Band auf jeden Fall anhören und wie bei so vielen werde ich mal darauf warten, sie irgendwann live zu sehen.

Funeral For A Friend is a rather unknown post-hardcore-band although they’re such a long time in this business. With the album Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation they gained great prestige within the scene and the song Escape Artists Never Die is exactly from this album.

It is about love – like thousand other songs, but it’s not about this beautiful one with the butterflies in the belly, but the one you want to escape from as soon as possible. A love that binds, one where hatred grows, because one’s so damn addicted to the other person. But you just want the relationship to be over. This is compared with the work of an escape artist in this song. Especially the line of the text “With a hundred thousand lies, timing’s everything.” describes it very well. All are waiting for that you finally free yourself, all the lights are on you at this very important moment and now timing is the most fundamental thing.

I’ve known this song forever, but lately I’ve heard it more often than in the past. It’s just a song that stays in your mind. I like the voice of the singer, Matthew Davies. It just has so much character. But the music, the atmosphere that it builds, is really not to despise.

So if you like post-hardcore, which is a bit emo, then you should definitely listen to one of their songs. And now I will wait for the time to see them live.
