Es gibt selten so talentierte Sängerinen wie Lacey Sturm von Flyleaf. Ihre Stimme ist so außergewöhnlich. Als ich mir zum ersten Mal ein Lied von dieser Band anhörte, welches übrigens Cassie war, war ich etwas verwirrt. Ihre Stimmfarbe hat mich so irritiert, sie ist so anders. Ich habe mir das Lied immer und immer wieder angehört, weil ich dabei etwas gefühlt habe, was ich nicht so recht beschreiben kann. Ich habe andere Songs von Flyleaf gesucht, begonnen zu recherchieren, warum sie so heißen, warum sie screamt und man kann sagen, dass diese Frau die Musik fühlt. Deshalb berühren die Lieder, die Texte. Und sie haben so viele unterschiedliche: Da sind diese ruhigen, angenehmen, die man am liebsten zum Einschlafen hören würde und dann die mit den aggressiven Riffs und Screams. Müsste ich mich entscheiden, welche ich lieber höre, könnte ich es nicht.

Aber nun zur Geschichte hinter dem Lied. Am 20. April 1999 wurde von zwei Schülern der Columbine High School in Denver, Colorado ein Amoklauf auf die Schule verübt. Dabei wurden insgesamt zwölf Schüler getötet und 24 weitere verletzt. Am Ende töteten sich die zwei Jungen selbst.

Einer der beiden fragte die Schülerin Cassie Bernall, ob sie an Gott glaubt und hielt ihr dabei die Pistole an den Kopf. Das Mädchen antwortete mit einem lauten „Ja“. Und für diese Antwort wurde sie erschossen.

Solche Vorfälle sind tragisch, heftig. Flyleaf bringt aber genau diese Emotion damit rüber und bekennt sich dazu, an Gott zu glauben. Viele ihrer Lieder handeln von der Liebe zu Gott, weil er laut einem Interview wesentlich dazu beigetragen hat, dass Lacey Sturm in ihren jungen Jahren keinen Selbstmord begangen hat. Der Glaube an ihn hat sie sozusagen gerettet.

Ich persönlich glaube nicht an Gott, aber ich denke, dass glauben an sich sehr wichtig ist. Egal woran man glaubt, es gibt Hoffnung. Leider ist Sturm nicht mehr die aktuelle Sängerin der Band, da sie sich voll und ganz ihrer Familie widmet. Ich hoffe jedoch weiterhin, dass sie irgendwann wieder Musik macht.

There are not many talented singers out there like Lacey Sturm of Flyleaf. Her voice is so exceptional. When I listened to a song by this band for the first time, which was Cassie by the way, I was confused. The color of her voice was so different. I have listened to it over and over, because I felt something, what I couldn’t even describe. I searched for other songs by Flyleaf, started to investigate why they’re named so, why she screams and one must simply say, that this woman feels the music in such an incredible way. Therefore, the songs, the lyrics touch. They have so many different kinds of songs: there are the quiet, pleasant ones, that you would prefer listen to fall asleep and then the ones with aggressive riffs and screams. If someone told me to choose, which ones I’d rather hear I couldn't do it.

But now to the story behind the song. On April 20, 1999, a rampage on the Columbine High School in Denver, Colorado was perpetrated by two students. Twelve people were killed and another 24 were injured. In the end, the two boys killed themselves.

One of two young men asked the student Cassie Baker whether she believes in God or not and held a gun to her head. The girl replied with a loud “Yes” She was shot dead for this response.

Such incidents are tragic. Flyleaf shows the emotion and professes that they believe in God. Many of their songs are concerned to the love to God, because according to an interview he has helped Sturm to commit no suicide in her younger years. The belief in him has saved her.

Personally I don’t believe in God, but I think the belief is important. No matter what one believes, there is hope. Unfortunately, Storm isn’t no longer the current singer of the band, because she fully and completely decided to dedicate to her family. I still hope that she will make music again.
